I wanted to write a post about Steven Covey's Time Management Quadrant.
Each of the quadrants shows how we divide our time.
1 - The Quadrant of Necessity - Things we didn't plan for but must manage now.
2 - The Quadrant of Quality and Personal Leadership - This is where we focus and get important things done.
3 - The Quadrant of Deception - The unimportant distractions that take away our focus.
4 - The Quadrant of Waste - Mindless activity that we should avoid
I had trouble finding an example for the first quadrant, Manage, the quadrant of necessity.
I wanted a first-hand example but was having difficulty.
We spend much of our day dealing with things that are necessary but not always planned.
Right then, my cat came running into the house with a live baby mouse in her mouth.
She dropped it on my bedroom carpet.
Did I mention it was alive? 😳
I was in a true Quadrant 1 moment.
I dropped what I was doing.
I exercised, rearranged, and cleaned my room faster than ever, as I chased the mouse around.
Finally, I barricaded it into a corner where I was able to catch it.
Anything that you do during the day that wasn't planned in advance falls into Quadrant 1.
The question is, how much time do you spend each day doing things you didn't plan for?
What is your example of a Quadrant 1 activity?
Stay tuned for a discussion on Quadrant 2
