The results of my recent poll on retaining an attorney were revealing.
The poll question was - What is the main reason you don't have an attorney on retainer?
The answer choices and results were:
I hate attorneys 14%
I know an attorney 51%
I never use attorneys 16%
Why would I call an attorney? 19%
Here is a short summary of how this breaks down.
14% of the people hate attorneys they don't even know, even though those attorneys could provide beneficial services that no one else can.
We hate attorneys because:
- they are smarter than us
- they speak a language we don't understand
- they are intimidating and talk down to us, and, to most of all
- they are way too EXPENSIVE.
As the saying goes, "EVERYONE HATES ATTORNEYS UNTIL THEY NEED ONE."
51% of the people polled said they know an attorney.
What does that even mean?
I often say, "I protect attorneys from their friends, family, and neighbors who feel entitled to free legal advice whenever they want it, even if it isn't within that attorney's area of expertise".
No attorney practices every area of law, so simply knowing one attorney will not be beneficial most of the time.
16% say they never use attorneys.
They may not use them for the reasons given above on why people hate them, especially the cost factor.
Think about it, attorneys are there for our benefit, to protect us, and to help us make sound decisions.
For the 19% who don't know why they would use an attorney, there is hope.
There are so many reasons to retain, not just an attorney but, an entire law firm.
We are not taught the benefits of good legal counsel for all of our life's issues.
Consider that every document/contract you have ever signed was written by someone else's attorney.
Why would you not have your attorney review it?
Everyone needs a will but 70% of the people do not have an up-to-date will. If you move to a different state you need a new will.
Wills are state-specific.
I make the assumption that those who hate attorneys never use them, and most of the ones who know an attorney, don't actually use them either.
That would mean the large majority of people do not use attorneys.
Today's question is, If cost was not an issue would you call a law firm more often for advice in all legal matters?
