I was at an ambassador meeting for my local chamber of commerce.

We always have a question for each ambassador to answer to learn a bit more about each of us.

On this particular day, the Chair of the meeting had something pressing on her mind.

She owns a restaurant and several shops in a renovated historical building.

There is a long corridor through the building with a wide hallway.

One night, some local teenagers trashed the hallway by having a food fight. There is video coverage of the event, but the owner's husband does not want to pursue the issue. He considers it a one-off event.

Her question to the room was, "What do you think I should do? Should I post it on social media, call the police, and/or show the video to the local high school? "

None of my fellow business owners mentioned that it was a legal issue, aside from commenting that parents might get mad if it was posted on social media.

When it was my turn to speak, I explained that she was describing a legal issue. "Why don't you talk to an attorney?"

Her face lit up. She hadn't even considered that option. She exclaimed, "YES, I'll ask my attorney!!

This is an issue I face on a daily basis. Most business owners don't consider their rights because they have the mindset that attorneys are too expensive.

They don't recognize issues as being legal in nature.

And then there are people who believe the situation might get worse if they involve an attorney. Y'all, those folks watch too much TV!

If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.

I know attorneys who have my services because they don't practice all areas of law, they are too busy working their own business to handle their family's issues and they travel out of state.

Attorneys love knowing they are covered in any situation, even 24/7 for emergencies.

Imagine your whole family having access to a nationwide network of law firms for everything life throws your way.

This is why I often ask, If you could pick up the phone and get legal advice without getting a big bill, would you?
