Numbers play an important role in our lives.

It was during a conversation that the number 369 was mentioned.

I don't even remember the context of the conversation.

When I heard that number, I was immediately taken back to my Brownie Troop No. 369 when I was 7 years old.

I hadn't thought of that in many years. I was so proud of those numbers on the sleeve of my uniform.

Here on LinkedIn, we talk about numbers in the business sense of quotas, percentages, and "did you hit your numbers?".

I find it fascinating that numbers can evoke emotions in us depending on the significance we give them.

There are numbers that immediately transform us to another time, like my Brownie troop.

What comes to mind when you read the number 911?

How do you feel when you hear that someone was born on the same date as you?

1492 is a significant number for Americans, as is 1776 and so many others.

Then there are numbers that even instill fear in some people such as 666.

I was once at a book store with my son. He made a small purchase of which the total was $6.66.

My son jokingly pointed it out to me. We chuckled. I remember wondering where he had learned about the number 666 because I had never mentioned it.

The cashier immediately asked my son if he would like to buy something else to change the total.

Now we both laughed. UH, NO, not necessary.

The cashier explained that this was one of the reasons they had small items at the register. There are people who will not make a purchase if the numbers 666 are in the total.

It's a bad omen, for all those good, not so faithful Christians.

The number 13 scares many people.

Many hotels and other public buildings do not have 13th floors, which of course, is ridiculous.

If you are on the 14th floor of a building that left off the number 13 in the elevator, are you not still on the 13th floor?

When we hear certain numbers we are reminded of birthdays, anniversaries, and other significant dates.

When you see the number 314, do you immediately put a decimal point and call it 3.14?

Did you know that 3/14 is International Pi Day each year?

I am no expert with numbers but I recognize their significance in our lives. My teachers throughout my education will attest to that.

When thinking of the universe, the number of stars is so large that, although we can perceive many of them, we can't conceive how many there actually are.

I love that numbers don't lie. They are just the numbers.

How we calculate numbers is a different matter.

We can skew the numbers to make them work for us.
