Being in business is like being a performer.
Good performers appear natural, as if they are completely aligned to their role.
Let's face it, do we really believe Sir Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lector) would eat someone's liver in real life? He sure had me convinced!
Whether you are a business owner, a sales rep or an employee in a cubical, there is a role you play.
We align ourselves to our role and act accordingly.
Does this mean we are disingenuous by acting differently at work than at home? NO, not in the slightest.
We talk about work culture for that exact reason. Work culture is not family culture or social culture, although times are changing.
A great example are the people who think it's okay to bring their personal issues to work with them.
They haven't prepared for work, they allow their issues to play
But, I digress...
Whatever your position, you can prepare for uncomfortable situations by preparing for them.
This includes cold calling, interviewing for a job, or the way you handle yourself in a performance review.
@David Walters book, Million Dollar Rebuttal, he talks about giving yourself a pep talk and repeating positive affirmations before cold calling.
We have the most incredible technology today to help us practice our skills.
Have you ever seen a video of the way you talk to others at work or while you are making cold calls?
The more you do it, the better you get. In other words, PRACTICE.
When you know you are about to have a performance review or a difficult conversation with a colleague, you can prepare in advance.
Play out worst case scenarios in your head with well prepared answers to objections in cold calling situations.
Prepare by practicing the best responses you will have for tough situations.
You can learn to overcome objections before they happen.
You'll also learn when to let a prospect go before they let you go.
That makes it easier for you and the people you are talking to.
You can learn to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.
