467 - Why don't you get referrals?

I could end this post right there.


Yesterday, @Simon Severino asked, Do you know any business referral tips?


After giving it some thought, I realized it's not rocket science and the reasons most people don't get referrals is that they simply don't ask.


Sometimes we make things more difficult than they have to be.


Most people who complain about not getting referrals do not ask for them.


It's like someone who wants to get married but never pops the question.


Who are the best people to ask?


Existing clients.


That's right, why not ask the people who know and use your services/products.


Of course, you should branch out from there. There are people who may not need your services but know those who do, such as business partners, and people you do business with.


In my business, a referral may come from someone who doesn't see the need because they already have a relationship with an attorney.


They know people who don't have that relationship, and I can provide those people with an entire law firm.


Another reason you may not be receiving referrals is because you aren't giving any.


Listen to what others are saying and what they might need. Then think about your network locally and on LinkedIn, if possible. Give a qualified referral.


A qualified referral means that both parties know the introduction will happen. You have contacted both.


When possible, get permission from the person who needs help for the referral partner to contact them.


WHY? Because we know our referral partners will make the call. We are giving them business.


Have you given referrals? What about when someone asks you for a referral, have you given one then?


Try giving referrals for a while to see how it feels. It actually feels great to give someone a referral.


Giving a referral is not a guarantee that there will be closed business, it's an introduction to a possible business relationship.


It also shows your business network that you have them in mind.


Today is a great day to give a referral.


The way to get referrals is easy. Start giving them.
