Abraham Lincoln wrote: "Let reverence for the laws, be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe, that prattles on her lap - let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in Primers, spelling books, and in Almanacs; let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice." The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume I, "Address Before the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois" (January 27, 1838), p. 112.
Lincoln used to give free legal advice.
Unfortunately, we haven't heeded Mr. Lincoln's advice.
Today, the average attorney costs around $300 per hour, with some costing over $1000 per hour.
The most common complaints about attorneys are that they are expensive, unresponsive and there's no one to hold them to account.
Our "education" on the justice system comes mainly from TV shows about people tangled in expensive, convoluted lawsuits.
Most people won't call an attorney unless they have a dire legal matter because of the high hourly cost.
I recall an attorney who once told me, "Jane, I find that most people can come up with $3000-$5000, when they really need it".
He wasn't concerned with helping people. He's in it for the money. That attorney is what gives the industry a bad rap and he does not represent the majority.
What about all the people who need everyday advice, a contract reviewed or want to know their rights in a particular situation? What about the 70% of Americans who don't have a will?
Our legal system is too expensive. Most people are priced out of the system.
Too many small business start ups are using poorly written, unfinished contracts they get free online.
They cut costs up front by skipping the step of having documents reviewed by an attorney.
