We tend to hear news in extremes. We thrive on superlatives and sensationalism.
Did we create our current reality or have we been conditioned and desensitized by mass media?
Yes, I'm talking about CNN and FOX, not to mention the more extreme sources.
It's as if the current news process is a vicious cycle:
- The media presents what gets the highest ratings.
- What gets the highest ratings are the shows that we watch.
- We watch news and shows that justify our beliefs and make us feel good.
- The media presents what gets the highest ratings.
I can't speak to this because I don't own a TV and I never depend on only one news source.
Once I realized how biased ALL mass media was, and how I was being programmed to certain beliefs, I turned it off.
It's difficult not to make it political.
As an example, I know people who will ONLY watch Fox because they feel very strongly that it is the only news source that provides accurate reporting.
They say, "every other news source is liberal". WHA???
This shows me how deeply rooted their beliefs depend on that new source.
What would that mean if every other news source was liberal?
Would it not be an indication that the majority of the country is liberal?
We know that's not true, therefore their reasoning makes no sense.
I'm not trying to bash one source over another. I think it's time we recognize that we are being hoodwinked (that's such a cool word) regardless of the source.
Have we lost the capacity to say "STOP, I want to hear the FULL STORY"?
Do you trust one news source or diverse sources for the information you take in?
