Yesterday, a prospective told me that she already has a will.
Her mother had written one for her.
WHA'??? That's NOT a will.
I explained to her that a will is private and highly sensitive document put together by the person themselves. In this case, by HER, not her mother.
A will tells your family what your wishes are for:
- your personal things
- financial matters
- intellectual property
- real estate
- medical decisions
- your pets...and more
No one, other than an attorney, should write your will for you.
Wills must be signed and notarized, by you!
Don't ask a family member, a friend, clergyman or anyone else to write your will for you.
This is the final day of National Make a Will Month.
I hope that I have been able to shed at least a bit of light on the important of having wills for everyone over the age of 18.
I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have regarding will preparation, as long as they aren't legal in nature.
Your will included medical directives and powers of attorney. It should also include your HIPPA release.
Don't send your adult children off to college without these important documents in place. You can't make important decisions for them without having the proper directives.
If you are a business owner, your employees also need these documents.
Do your family and yourself a favor. Have this conversation so you can all rest In peace that everything is taken care of.
Do you, your family and your employees have their wills in place?
