My son, Philip, asked me with a somewhat sarcastic tone, "Mom, are you doing enough?"
He had walked me through a simple exercise of writing everything I do on individual sticky notes.
Each sticky note was now glaring at me from my dining room wall.
The notes were arranged in order of importance to me.
My business with LegalShield came first.
Then came my commitment to my "little" sister with Big Brother Big Sister, Stephen Ministry, and so on.
There were 9 notes total and each one signified a time commitment.
That's when Philip asked me, "Are you doing enough?"
I got the message. It was time to scale back.
There was Rotary, Toastmasters, Orchestra, and a few other organizations I belonged to. I held positions in some of them.
I mapped out a plan to step back from most of those time commitments when my terms were up.
It wasn't easy or something I wanted to do, but I knew I had to if I wanted to focus more on my business.
Sometimes we find ourselves wanting to do it all but we soon learn that it's not possible.
We all have the same 24 hours.
I had been trying to do it all and I found myself in a constant state of feeling rushed in everything I did.
I took my son's advice and scaled back for several years before adding back a few activities that I really enjoy.
Have you ever overcommitted yourself before realizing you can't do it all?
