During an after-hours business mixer, everyone was divided into groups of 4-5.

This was an ice-breaker activity to help people get to know each other.

The directive was to tell everyone in your group what you do in 5 words or fewer.

This was a little different than the usual 30-second elevator pitch, and a whole lot shorter.

Most people struggle to tell what they do because they have a need to explain it all.

Finding ways to explain how you help people in as few words as possible serves to spark an interest so they will want to learn more.

It doesn't matter what industry you are in, If you say something like, I help people, you have told them nothing. We all help people.

Every business helps its clients in some way.

Here are a few of my 5 words, or fewer introductions, I :

  • make lawyers affordable.

  • save small businesses money.

  • provide affordable legal resources.

  • help employees stay focused

You get the idea.

I learned more about those people during that exercise than if they had each given a 5-minute explanation.

I got the bottom line of what they do, and some were memorable.

There was a woman who does foot massage who said, I squeeze people's feet.

We all laughed and we won't forget it.

It was memorable and we will all remember it.

There was a cake and cookie baker who said, I sweeten your day.

I loved the computer repair guy who said, I fix computers. It doesn't get simpler than that.

What are some examples of how you help people (in 5 words or less, of course)?
