We can all breathe a little easier knowing that the IRS is not going to hire 87,000 new auditors all at once.
This short-lived fear shows how anxious small business owners are about being audited.
The approx. 2500 new auditors being hired are helping to cover the loss of about 17K auditors over the last decade. 2000 of those will go to the small business unit. (See comments for links to details)
Are you worried about having to face an audit alone?
Did you know that Line 17 of your Schedule C tax form is for legal and professional services?
That's right, legal service fees are tax-deductible.
The difference between taking a tax attorney to an audit and a CPA or accountant is simple.
The tax attorney knows the laws, knows which questions can be asked, and doesn't have to answer questions the others must answer.
A friend of mine was audited. She went to answer a question when her tax attorney reached over and stopped her from answering.
He looked at the auditor and said, "You can't ask my client that question. That's not why we are here"
My friend said she sat a little taller and felt like flexing her muscles. It was comforting to know she had an expert by her side.
It's still possible to protect yourself for 2021. If you want information, ASK ME. It never hurts to learn.
