To say EVERYONE is your ideal client dilutes your message.

People don't like hearing they are being lumped into your illusive marketing pool.

Koda August recently wrote about the importance of knowing your ICP (Ideal Client Profile).

You may have several ICPs but the important thing is, you have to know when to use them and each one must be specific.

My ICP on LinkedIn is small business owners, with 0-20 employees.

I know this group of business owners have the same legal needs as a large company and so do their employees.

Does that mean I only talk to that demographic? NO

Another demographic for me is families with children and teenagers who are away in college. This applies especially in employee groups.

You must know who you are talking to and why. Your message to those people must be clear.

It's not a good idea to proclaim your ideal client is "Anyone who breathes" or "Anyone with skin".

Those may be humorous but they don't give a clear message. Those messages tell everyone that you are ready to sell to anyone who will talk to you.

With 800 million people on LinkedIn, they are not all your ideal clients.

Start by deciding who is NOT your ideal client. For example, I only work in the US and Canada. For that reason, I don't connect with a lot of people in other countries.

Build your ICP and support those people. You will begin attracting your ideal clients.
