I've had a word for the year since 2008 when I chose the word Gratitude.
As I drove to work one day, I was thinking about all the things I was grateful for and it came to me that gratitude was my word to focus on that year.
Within a few minutes of choosing my new Word of the Year, a car passed me with the license plate: GR8TUD (Twilight Zone music started playing in my head)
I took that as a sign. I laughed out loud and accepted Gratitude as my new word!
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year for 2022 was Gaslighting. The word is chosen late in the year, based on the number of times a word has been looked up.
On a personal level, you choose your Word of the Year at the beginning of the year. It's there to motivate and inspire you throughout the year. It sets a tone for the year.
I don’t remember every word I've chosen but they are always words that MOTIVATE and INSPIRE.
Those were both Words of the Year at some point, along with JOY, DESIRE, PERSISTENCE, FOCUS, DETERMINED, and COMMITTED.
For 2022 my word has been UNLEASH.
I unleashed a lot of potential this year and it feels great!
Keeping a word or phrase at the front of your focus helps to keep you in line with your vision and your goals.
You will also notice your word showing up in ways you hadn't expected.
My word for 2023 is Pivot because I am making a lot of changes and pivoting as needed.
What is your word of the year for 2023?
