There are some myths about the need for a Will.
Myth # 1 - People believe they don't need a will if they don't have much money.
Fact - a will can still be useful for designating guardians for your children or pets, specifying your funeral arrangements, handling your social media, or a special collection (coins, stamps, baseball cards...)
Myth # 2 - People say, My spouse gets everything.
Fact - While it's true that many states have laws that give a spouse a share of the deceased person's estate, it's not always the entire estate. Keep in mind, if the deceased person had children from a previous relationship, those children may have a claim on the estate as well.
Myth # 3 - Only old people need a Will.
Fact - Anyone over 18 needs a Will to name who should make decisions on their behalf, in the event they can't speak for themselves. They may also have a cell phone, social media, a pet, and personal items they want someone specific to have.
Myth # 4 - Free online Will forms are the most affordable way to get a will
Fact - Many free online forms are poorly written, some by design. They want you to use their lawyers for revision. But, it doesn't have to be expensive to have a discussion with an Estate Attorney and a properly written Will prepared.
Myth # 5 - There are people who believe that if they get their Will prepared, they will die.
Fact - 65% don't have any Will at all, yet 100% of us will need one.
Will preparation does not cause death.
Not only does it not cause death, it can make life a lot easier for those you love.
Your Will is your final love letter to your family and loved ones.
You are letting them know that you cared enough to make decisions so they wouldn't have to.
It can also prohibit those greedy people in your life from taking things you didn't intend for them to have. Let's face it, there is one in almost every family.
Would you rather make your own decisions or let the state do it for you?
