Have you ever seen a harpist play?

👼 For some, this will conjure visions of sweet girls with angel wings.

This is an analogy I use when describing misconceptions about other's jobs.

Then, I found this clip of exactly what I have often tried to describe to people.

Many years ago, during one of the operas from Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, I was seated next to the harps, exactly as seen in this video.

The first time I experienced it, I put my horn down and sat in awe as I watched them sweat through this section of the music.

I have never seen anyone work so hard, using their hands and feet simultaneously as they blazed through this mind-boggling array of chord changes. You can hear the relief once they get to the end.

Until then, I thought I had a lot to do.

Many jobs are like this.

We downplay what one person does over what we have to do.

Do you see people shrugging off other people's work in your profession?

You may even be the one no one notices as if your job is less important. Many jobs seem less important until the job isn't done.

Try going without a cleaning staff for a week and see how the office looks.

What can you do to help others overcome these misconceptions?

✅ Everyone was hired for a reason.

✅ Everyone is part of a team.

✅ Every job matters.

Remember, no matter how menial you think a job is, it directly or indirectly improves your work.

Have you been guilty of falsely minimalizing someone's job?
