Most people aren't prepared for unexpected emergencies or opportunities.
We love living in that comfortable place where nothing changes, yet we yearn for more in our lives.
We prepare for disasters that rarely occur. Emergency preparation is essential, but we're more likely to be given opportunities that we haven't prepared for.
We spend so much time preparing for unknown future events that may never occur, yet we forget to practice for the important moments we know are coming.
There are many things people say they are prepared for until they happen.
Events like presentations, interviews, or performances can be nerve-racking because they're important and we want to do well. We know they are coming but we often wait until the last minute to prepare.
Consider the situation where you're asked to deliver a speech at a special event, such as a wedding, funeral, anniversary, or graduation. While it's an honor, it also comes with a significant responsibility to convey your message effectively.
So, how can you get ready for these situations?
Practice is important, but so is being organized, knowing your material well, and having a positive attitude.
You might not have to give a speech, but whatever opportunity you get will probably push you to do something new and challenging.
You may be speaking to a business owner, HR, or the CEO. It's all about presenting yourself as the professional you want to be. This is your opportunity to rise!
Don't do it alone. Ask someone you trust and respect to give you feedback.
Be yourself. Don't try to emulate someone you're not.
One excellent way to prepare for public speaking is to join Toastmasters International. There are live and virtual meetings. Toastmasters provides a safe environment to learn how to speak and practice speaking publicly.
Are you ready for unexpected opportunities as much as you are for emergencies?
