Koda August recently shared a great piece of advice with me. His simple message was: an inch wide and a mile deep.

This idea can help us focus our efforts on catching the right clients instead of trying to catch anyone and everyone.

Here's what going an inch wide and a mile deep can look like in business:

  • Join a chamber of commerce and take advantage of the events and networking opportunities they provide.

  • Join a professional networking group and learn about the other members' businesses.

  • Join a service organization, such as Rotary International, Lions, Kiwanis, or Optimists, and fully engage with their initiatives to strengthen relationships with the members.

  • Attend industry-specific events: Instead of going to every networking event in town, choose events that cater to your industry or niche. This will increase your chances of meeting people who share your interests and goals.

By focusing on specific groups and getting deeply involved, you will create more meaningful relationships and build a strong referral system.

It's better to sit down with the same 10-15 people every week or two than to attend multiple events daily where you barely remember people's names.

What would you add to this list to reach your target audience?
