Are you lured in by the chocolates, romantic cards, hearts, and flowers, or turned off by the commercialism?
As a child, I loved Valentine's Day because of the thrill of giving out and receiving cards at school, and for that moment when my father came home from work with red chocolate-filled hearts for each of us.
There was a special emotion in those moments.
Later, in high school and college, it became an awkward day of expectations. Would my boyfriend buy me a gift? What should I get him? Do boys even like Valentine's Day? So many questions...
I remember witnessing friends who felt slighted because they didn't get that special piece of jewelry they hoped for or a big enough bouquet of flowers they somehow felt they deserved (were entitled to).
The lighthearted acting of giving and receiving was replaced with uncertainty and, sometimes, embarrassment.
Do you have expectations for this day?
Do you feel more comfortable giving or receiving?
Where is the love?
