As a business owner or HR professional, it's essential to stay on top of mainstream events, but our news sources often tend to polarize current issues, to put it mildly.
Do you rely on one news source, or do you get informed from several different viewpoints to formulate your own opinion?
I found the following chart helpful in discerning available news sources in order to stay informed without all of the political bias.
How do your employees handle news bias? Of course, restraining political discussion in the workplace is the best practice to help employees build healthy relationships with co-workers.
Encourage healthy discussions at work to diffuse even the mention of politics, especially when you have employees who just can't "let it go"? Get people focused on important projects, reaching goals, talking about the vision and mission for everyone in the company.
Encourage break time discussions on food, family, recreation, sports, hobbies, and other topics not related to politics or religion.
One thing you don't want to do is alienate anyone you work with. It's important to be mindful that no matter where you are, there are people with differing opinions, and to remember that, they are entitled to their opinions as much as you are yours.
More than anything, it is important to make it clear that, regardless of their political leanings, they are important to the workplace. No one is "evil" simply based on their political ideology, nor should they be shunned.
As Americans, we should be embracing our differences because that is what makes our country great,
