Simply put, the Johari Window is a heuristic technique that brings awareness to what we know about ourselves and what others know about us.

The name Johari comes from the two first names of the gentlemen, Joseph Luft (1916–2014) and Harrington Ingham (1916–1995), who developed the Johari Window back in 1955.

First, there are the things we know about ourselves and everyone else knows as well. Everyone knows how tall we are, what color our eyes are, and other obvious traits.

Second, there are the things we know about ourselves that no one else knows. Our personal thoughts, ideas and things we may have done that no one else is aware of.

Third, there are things others know about us that we are not aware of, like a habit we have or a phrase we repeat often. I have a friend who constantly sighs, yet she is completely unaware of it.

Fourth, and what I find most thought provoking, are the things about us that neither we nor anyone else knows. I look at these as the things only God knows. One example, there is a span of time when a person is pregnant, but neither they nor anyone else is aware of it.

Which of these windows most fascinates you and why?
